MD Anderson Cancer Center Vice President, Faculty and Academic Affairs in Houston, Texas

The Vice President, Faculty and Academic Affairs provides leadership by providing oversight, support and integration of the academic life of faculty, ensuring excellence in academics at MD Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC).

This includes responsibility for the Faculty and Academic Wellness program and the Center for Professionalism Standards and Support.

The VP will provides guidance to the CAO on the direction, strategic planning and management of the development and delivery of academic relationships and programs at MDACC and ensuring excellence in academics throughout the institution. Partners with key institutional stakeholders to align strategies that support their academic enterprise while focused on the strategy of One MD Anderson.

Direct reports include the Director, Faculty and Academic Wellness and the Director, Center for Professionalism Standards and Support.


Academic Governance:

  • In partnership with the CAO, the Vice President, Faculty and Academic Affairs will work with leadership and provide oversight of the following Faculty Academic responsibilities and activities:

  • Review and oversight of academic policies.

  • Participate and support all activities and policies related to the faculty promotion & tenure process. Serves as a decision maker in faculty related due process.

  • Participate and support all activities and polices related to faculty compensation.

  • Partner with the Chief Medical Executive, Chief Scientific Officer, Division Heads and Human Resources regarding recommendations for faculty compensation and space allocations.

  • In partnership with the CAO, lead the strategic planning and direction for Academic programs and affairs.

  • Ensure fairness in evaluation, compensation and resource allocation of faculty across all mission areas.

  • Drive innovation in our faculty recruitment and onboarding practices.

  • Lead-the-way to establish outstanding faculty professionalism programs and standards.

  • Direct faculty programs and policies that enhance the faculty life cycle and faculty vitality.

  • Enhance and develop new and supportive faculty health and wellness programs.

  • Maintain a current record of achievements and discoveries by faculty and program.

  • Communicate effectively and frequently with the academic and administrative leadership, as well as with the faculty and staff and the faculty senate, to ensure that the strategies and activities of the academic enterprise are aligned with the mission and goals of the organization and the needs of its faculty and staff.

  • Oversee inter-institutional academic agreements for research and educational programs.

  • Represent the institution on academic issues including, but not limited to, The University of Texas System, other UT Components, local, state and federal legislative, regulatory, accreditation and compliance agencies, and the community at large.

  • Work closely with the Chief Legal Officer and the Chief Compliance Officer on matters pertaining to faculty, conflict of interest and professionalism.

  • Manage faculty awards programs such as the Sabin Fellowship and Stein Awards.


The Vice President, Faculty and Academic Affairs demonstrates organizational responsibility through institutional-minded decision-making and through support and accountability for self and team ongoing personal development. As an MDACC leader, ongoing personal development includes, but is not limited to, learning, practicing and continued application of leadership skills through coaching, mentoring and/or facilitation in order to model within and give back to the MDACC community.


  • MD, PhD or MD/PhD with Faculty Status.

  • 10 years as a research or clinical faculty member in an academic healthcare setting.

  • Five years of progressive leadership experience.

  • Experience in faculty development initiatives and engagement programs at local, state, national, and international levels.

  • Experience developing academic partnerships and a successful record of teamwork, both as a team member and team leader.

  • Administrative, analytical, tactical, and interpersonal skills to guide the development of affiliations and collaborations consistent with the institutional mission and objectives.

  • Strong operational and financial acumen with the ability to lead and partner around a vision for excellence in academic medicine.
