The primary purpose of the Animal Resources Team Leader is to maintain the overall operation of the main breeding room and to provide for the supervision and training of animal colony and research personnel. Responsible for achieving and maintaining the highest possible level of animal husbandry standards for the breeding program and the animal colony through efficient utilization of personnel.



Must follow sterile procedures and manually do a surgical scrub on both hands and arms before entering the colony, includes daily wearing of sterile surgical gown, mask, cap, and gloves whenever working with mice. Requires reaching up to 6 ft. high and bending over to grab cages off animal racks. Must grasp and lift a 6 lb. animal cage and manually carry it to the change-out hood up to 60 times a day. Must walk from sterile cage cart to the laminar flow hood and from the animal racks to the hood up to 100 times a day. Requires the manual use of forceps to pick up mice by the tail to transfer to a clean cage. Prepares disinfectants. Must schedule the ear tagging of all experimental animals, requiring good manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination for repetitive grasping of mice to apply ear tags. Record births and keep accurate breeding records. Maintain animal production by culling and setting up new pairs of breeders, requiring the ability to visually observe animals daily to determine their condition (pregnancy and morbidity). Performs very heavy work (750 lbs) numerous times a day, pushing and pulling stainless steel animal racks on rollers with 72 cages each. Requires bending at the waist to manually sweep and mop the floors daily. Schedules cleaning duties for animal areas. Maintains sterile laundry for inventory and walk from one area of hospital to another to deliver and pick-up laundry for bagging and autoclaving. Assists in on-the-job training and guidance of animal attendants and research technicians concerning standing operating procedures of the animal facility. Give input to appropriate manager concerning animal attendant annual evaluations.


Perform very heavy work (220 lbs.) up to 4 times a day, pushing sterile cage racks with 56 cages from sterilizer to hood and from hood to washroom. Requires occasional lifting of a 50 lb. water bottle case waist high to place on a dolly or rack. Once a month, reaching above the shoulder and bending at the waist to wipe and clean all the walls with disinfectant. Perform related duties as required. Must be familiar with isolator procedures and assist in maintaining isolators when necessary.


Required : High school diploma or equivalent.


Required : Four years of animal care experience in an animal hospital/clinic, research facility or related field to include two years in specialized housing and/or technical procedures. With Associate's degree, two years of required experience or with Bachelor's degree, no experience required.

Preferred : Previous supervisory experience. Experience gained in a university animal research setting.

Licensure : Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) within 180 days of hire or job change.
