Our Mission

While encompassing the overall mission of MD Anderson Cancer Center, the particular goals of the Department of Thoracic/Head and Neck Medical Oncology are to provide the highest quality of care to our patients and to advance the treatment and prevention of aerodigestive cancers through innovative clinical and laboratory research.

Our investigations involve many of the most promising molecularly-targeted agents and combinations of agents currently known. We emphasize rigorous study conduct and impeccable study design, and many of our studies have been developed through cooperative group mechanisms.

The Department of Thoracic/Head and Neck Medical Oncology staff directly responsible for patient care is comprised of 18 physicians, 12 research nurses, two inpatient mid-level providers, and 12 outpatient mid-level providers. Our physician team includes twelve physicians who care only for thoracic medical oncology patients in the Thoracic Center, two head/neck and 5 medical oncologists who treat both lung cancer and head/neck cancer patients in those respective outpatient clinic areas.


Data management

-Reviews medical records and demonstrates ability to extract pertinent information

-Transfers medical information accurately, completely and timely into PDMS and case report forms

-Seeks professional development through participation in professional organizations, serving on committees, attending research presentations, seminars and conferences

Protocol Management

–Coordinates sponsor representative access to source documentation through clinic audit station access, training on MDACC computer system and troubleshooting access related issues

–Maintains monitor log

–Attends site initiation meetings

–Maintains protocol assignment schedule, calendars, and educational assignments

–Assists team members to maintain current status on assignments.

Medical record auditing

–Reviews clinical research records against protocol to assure protocol time lines are met

–Reviews clinical research records for completion and accuracy

–Maintains protocol status reports to assure timely and accurate billing

–Creates and review protocol reports for accuracy and completion

Multidisciplinary collaboration –Communicates protocol data entry status to accountable sources

–Acts as a liaison between pharmaceutical representatives and data management personnel

–Coordinates research subject data from initial registration through study termination

–Provides clerical coverage as necessary

–Provides laboratory, biopsy, and ecg coverage as necessary


–Precepts new data management personnel

–Assesses data management personnel for learning deficits and assists research nurse supervisor to develop and present training programs to meet staff needs

Other duties as assigned

High school diploma or equivalent. Four years of related experience. May substitute required experience with completed years of college on a one to one basis.
