The mission of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is to eliminate cancer in Texas, the nation, and the world through outstanding programs that integrate patient care, research and prevention, and through education for undergraduate and graduate students, trainees, professionals, employees and the public.

The primary purpose of the research investigator position is to provide supervision and special training to technical personnel and perform highly technical work in medical and related research projects for the McCombs Institute.

Research Investigator

  1. Coordinates and conducts routine lab experiments including immunoassays, cell culture, drug treatment, spectrophotometry experiments, and electrophoresis.

  2. Provides thorough reports of experiments performed, both in writing in a laboratory notebook and verbally at weekly group meetings. These reports will include interpretation of the results, rationale for improvements in established experimental methods, and plans for improvements in experimental design.

  3. Exhibits considerable imagination, inventiveness, and initiative in planning and executing experiments and in evaluating the results.

  4. Proficient in most current laboratory procedures including the following: cell/tissue culture methods, molecular cloning, vector construction, transfection, immunochemistry, protein purification, western blotting, gene mapping, promoter analysis, transcription assays, RNA and DNA extraction, PCR, RT-PCR, mouse experiments and drug treatment, among others.

  5. Develops and revises research techniques and standard procedures.

  6. Assembles and operates the laboratory equipment.

  7. Assists/collaborates with the supervisor and other research staff in preparation of scientific reports.

  8. Manage lab supplies as required for projects.

  9. Independently design and execute biomarker validation experiments. Analyze and present results in laboratory meetings.

  10. Train junior lab personnel and troubleshoot technical and logistical issues independently.

  11. Other duties as assigned.


Required:Bachelor's degree in one of the natural sciences or related field.

Preferred Education

Master's degree



Five years of experience in scientific or experimental research work. With preferred degree, three years of required experience.

Preferred Experience:

Two years of pharmaceutical or a related industry experience with Luminex technology and immunoassays
