MD Anderson Cancer Center Research Assistant II in Houston, Texas

SUMMARY

The primary purpose of the Research Assistant II position is to provide technical and coordination skills in carrying out various research projects. Coordinates and conducts experiments and carries out research projects in varied areas of chemistry, biology, physics and other biomedical, or related basic science areas. Constructs, assembles and operates laboratory apparatus and equipment. Reads literature and confers with superiors regarding new procedures and modifies them according to the needs of the project. Records and evaluates data obtained in accordance with methods requested.

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

Research and Development

Research and Development in the Areas of Molecular Biology,

Immunology, Virology, Cell Biology, and Biochemistry.

• DNA & RNA isolation and plasmid purification

• Western blotting

• Cell apoptosis detection

• FACS analysis

• Immunoprecipitation analysis

• Proteinchip analysis

• siRNA technology

• immunofluorescence assay

• Animal studies

• Radiation usage

Cell Culture

The ability to perform general cell culture procedures using sterile technique, which would involve the growth and maintenance of various cell lines. Maintain Cell Culture Cell freezing, seeding, passage, and viability/growth analysis/cell death. Conduct molecular analysis in tissue culture cells.

Record Keeping Record keeping and data maintenance to meet supervisor, department / institute directives. Records experimental data by manually writing in a notebook or enter into a computer database. Collects and accurately calculate experimental data under the guidance of supervisor. Prepares graphs and charts by using computer.

General Lab Duties Assists with general lab functions as directed by lab supervisor. Maintains condition of -80C freezers in main laboratory and captain dream team duty. Assists with instrument maintenance and lab safety management. Assists with general tissue culture duty. Coordinate and execute disposal of hazardous waste. Participates in an "as needed basis" on projects and general lab functions as directed.

REQUIREMENTS

Education: Bachelor's degree with major course works in one of the basic sciences.

Preferred Education: Master's Level Degree

Experience: Two years of experience in scientific or experimental research work. No experience required with preferred degree.
