MD Anderson Cancer Center Medical Assistant - Breast Center in Houston, Texas

The Medical Assistant in the Breast Center at MD Anderson Cancer Center position provides patient care and customer service assistance to the ambulatory care patient, as delegated, and supports daily operations of the center.

With Nellie in mind, we strive to treat each breast cancer patient with personalized attention, the best diagnosis and treatment options, and follow-up care to maximize life after cancer. We are one of the largest breast cancer centers in the United States, treating 40,000 patients a year. This gives us a level of experience that is second to none. Our team of experts uses this knowledge to create highly specialized treatment plans for all types and stages of breast cancer.

The ideal candidate will have at least six months of medical assistant experience. Medical Assistant certification would be a plus.

Key Functions:

  1. Assists Staff:
  • Responsibilities include completion of routine patient care assignments, as delegated.

  • Accurately record vital signs and other data, report abnormalities to nursing staff.

  • Collects laboratory specimens and performs laboratory wave testing.

  1. Assists Patients:
  • Aids in completion of activities of daily living, mobilization, greeting, rooming, and vital signs.
  1. Work Environment:
  • Maintains environment in a clean, safe, and orderly manner.

  • Stock and maintain unit and patient care supplies and equipment.

  1. Effective Communication:
  • Escalates significant events and concerns regarding patients and their care to appropriate nursing staff.

  • Responsible for the security and confidentiality of patient information at all times.

  • Timely processing and rooming of all patients after registration.

  • Inform nurses when patients have been roomed.

  • Update "wait time boards" every 30 minutes.


Required: High school diploma/equivalent.

Preferred: Graduate of an approved Medical Assistant program or US Military medical services training program.


Required: One year of medical assistant experience. With preferred degree, no experience is required.

Preferred: Must have at least six months of medical assistant experience.


Required: Certified or eligible to be certified by one of the following based on Medical Assistant experience or preferred education:

  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)

  • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) by the American Society of Medical Technologists (AMT)

  • Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA)

  • National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) by the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)

Preferred: Certified or Registered Medical Assistant would be a plus.
