Clinical Nurse, Outpatient opportunity in Radiation Oncology (Bone & Brain Mets Clinic). The ideal candidate will have at least two years nursing experience and possess strong critical thinking and ambulatory assessment skills.
This position will cover the Bone and Brain Mets clinic.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Transformational Leadership: Clinical Nurse must lead others (co-workers, patients, families, significant others) to where they need to be in order to meet the demands of their future care needs. Organizes and prioritizes work of the patient care team which include but is not limited to administration of chemotherapy/biotherapy agents, pump connects /disconnects, administration of antibiotic therapy, administration of IV fluids, rapid response to chemotherapy reactions/ emergencies, IV starts, etc.

Radiation Oncology-specific functions Consultation, Simulation, and Treatment Planning Phase
• Identifies self and nursing role to patient
• Checks patient identification
• Verifies that informed consent has been obtained
• Obtains nursing history and assessment
• Identifies patient's physical and psychosocial needs
• Assesses patient's literacy level and ability to learn
• Teaches patient and family about general and site-specific side effects of radiation therapy and self-care measures
• Solicits questions to be sure patient and family understand teaching
• Explains treatment protocols appropriate to patient (e.g., external beam radiation, brachytherapy, radiosensitizers, radioprotectors, hyperfactionation, total body irradiation, combined modality therapy)
• Reinforces discussion of appropriate clinical trials and assists in informed consent process
• Documents individualized plan of care
• Communicates plan of care to patient, family, and radiation therapy team
• Assesses patient for general side effects of treatment (e.g., fatigue, skin changes)
• Assesses patient for acute site-specific or modality-specific side effects of treatment (e.g., alopecia, mucositis)
• Initiates measures to manage general side effects (e.g., dry desquamation, moist, desquamation, anorexia)
• Initiates measures to manage site-specific side effects (e.g., mucositis)
• Teaches self-care measures to manage side effects of treatment
• Alerts patient to report potentially dangerous or uncomfortable symptoms immediately to nurse of physician
• Monitors patient's psychological status and coping skills
• Explains procedures and answers patient's questions
• Documents patient's response to treatment and symptom management
• Checks appropriate laboratory data and communicates results to other member of healthcare team as needed
• Institutes appropriate radiation safety precautions
• Consults and collaborates with other members of the healthcare team. Demonstrates effective communication skills
• Refers patient as needed to appropriate specialists (e.g., dietitian, pain management team, sexual counselor)
• Discusses discharge instructions with patient and family
• Assesses patient for late effects of treatment
• Teaches or reinforces appropriate self-care measures
• Assesses patient for symptoms of recurrent disease
• Monitors patient's psychological status and coping skills
• Consults and collaborates with other members of the healthcare team as needed
• Checks appropriate laboratory and diagnostic data
• Reinforces need for patient to continue to report potentially dangerous or uncomfortable symptoms immediately to nurse or physician
• Evaluates and documents long-term response to therapy and side effects
• Refers patients as needed to appropriate specialists (e.g., dietitian, pain management team, sexual counselor)
• Instructs patient in cancer prevention and early detection measures.
Required: Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing.
Preferred: Bachelors of Science in Nursing.
Preferred: Two years of relevant clinical ambulatory oncology experience.
Required: Current State of Texas Professional Nursing license (RN). Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
Preferred: American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS), ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification as required by patient care area.
All clinical nurses with less than one year of registered nurse (RN) work experience will be required to participate in the Clinical Nurse Residency Program. Foreign trained nurses who have not practiced nursing as an RN in the United States for at least one year will also be required to participate in the Clinical Nurse Residency Program.
