MD Anderson Cancer Center Chair, Department of Experimental Therapeutics in Houston, Texas

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is seeking applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Experimental Therapeutics in the Division of Cancer Medicine.

By integrating fundamental research with translational and clinical science, this department aims to transform cancer care by facilitating the development of novel therapeutics. Through the deployment of disruptive technologies integrating chemical and structural biology, proteomics and metabolomics, functional genomics, disease modeling and somatic cell genetics faculty, researchers and trainees will identify and validate new therapeutics targets, inform on mechanisms of drug action, and elucidate mechanisms of de novo and acquired drug resistance. Collaborations that access to advanced data science and analytical platforms will guide therapeutics and fundamental science in areas such as cell signaling, cancer metabolism, epigenetics, immune-oncology, tumor evolution. As novel mechanisms are identified and validated, faculty will leverage the infrastructure and expertise of the Therapeutics Discovery Division where rational development of novel small molecules, protein and cellular therapeutics, will be enabled through structural biology, medicinal chemistry, genetics, protein engineering, pharmacology, molecular profiling and computational sciences. This department aims to rapidly translate these research findings through rigorous and quantitative research, applying the latest techniques and methodologies across a wide range of experimental models, from cell lines and genetically engineered mouse models to organoids and patient-derived xenografts.

The department works in close collaboration with the research and clinical leadership of the MD Anderson Moon Shot Program disease sites and enabling platforms to advance meritorious projects from concept to clinic. The department chair is responsible for providing administrative leadership for all areas of the department, including, but not limited to, basic and translational research programs; faculty development and evaluation; integration of educational programs; finance and budget; and long-range strategic planning. The chair will mentor and provide career development opportunities for department faculty and trainees, and foster their growth in research, academic, and professional areas. The chair will also represent the department, division, and institution in local, regional, state, and national matters.

To provide leadership and accomplish the mission of the Department of Experimental Therapeutics, ideal applicants should be known nationally and internationally in their research field; demonstrate skills in programmatic development and evaluation, including negotiation of agreements with clinical or industry partners; have research objectives that complement and contribute to the research-driven patient care mission of the institution; demonstrate administrative competence to ensure the smooth and efficient day-to-day operation of the department, resolving operational issues, and managing financial and human resources; have experience as an academic role model for faculty and trainees; and show commitment to the continued support and growth of the department, its faculty, and its mission.

Candidates should be at the rank of full professor or comparable administrative position and have demonstrated considerable ability and meaningful contributions in education and training, and successful mentoring of trainees and junior faculty. Applicants must have a doctoral degree (M.D., Ph.D., or equivalent) from an accredited academic institution.
