Ideal candidate will have a master's degree and three years of writing/editing experience for development, communications or related field.

The primary purpose of the Assistant Director of Development (Writers) position is to provide development writing expertise that promotes and supports the activities and goals of the Development Office through information gathering and sharing, writing, editing, proofreading, document/publications production and other writing services. The Assistant Director equips the Development Office staff with high-quality, creative materials that advance MD Anderson’s case for private funding.


Writing/editing – Write, edit, proofread and format persuasive cases for support, proposals, letters, reports, brochures, articles, presentations, talking points, web/digital content and other materials to ensure successful prospect cultivation and donor solicitation. Edit/translate technical information into clear, concise and scientifically accurate lay language for staff, donors and the public. 60%

Quality control – Emphasize accuracy and constant quality control. Protect and promote the brand and graphic standards of MD Anderson. 20%

Information management – Gather, manage and continually update relevant information regarding fundraising priorities and other institutional programs and services. Share and store acquired information and help maintain/enhance information-management systems. 20%

Other duties as assigned.

Required: Bachelor's degree in Advertising, Marketing, or related field. Two years of experience in development operations, fundraising, marketing, advertising, public relations or patient advocacy. May substitute required education degree with additional years of equivalent experience on a one to one basis.

Preferred: Master’s degree in English, Journalism, Communications or related field. Three years of experience in writing/editing for development (preferred), communications or related field. Familiarity with medical and scientific terminology gained from education or from experience at MD Anderson or comparable institution.
