MD Anderson Cancer Center Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) - Thoracic & Cardiovascular Surgery in Houston, Texas

The primary purpose of the Nurse Practitioner position in the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery (TCVS) Department is to promote and maintain the health of the client across the health care continuum. This includes the performance of complex tasks on a routine basis, which may involve direct and indirect clinical care, research assistance, operative, administrative and academic responsibilities.

The ideal candidate for the APRN position will have experience in surgical or medical oncology care for thoracic cancer patients.


Medical/Clinical Knowledge Mid-Level Providers demonstrate knowledge that includes an understanding of pathophysiology, patient presentation, differential diagnosis, patient management, surgical principles, health promotion, and disease prevention.

Mid-Level Providers demonstrate core knowledge about established and evolving biomedical and clinical sciences and the application of this knowledge to patient care in their area.

Mid-Level Providers demonstrate an investigatory and analytic thinking approach to clinical situations. This includes management of general medical and surgical conditions to include understanding, indication, contraindication, side effects, interactions and adverse reactions of pharmacologic agents and other relevant treatment modalities.

Patient Care Mid-Level Providers provide patient care appropriate to the population(s) served.

Mid-Level Providers demonstrate care that is effective, patient-centered, timely, efficient, and equitable for the treatment of health problems and the promotion of wellness.

Mid-Level Providers counsel and educate patients and their families about disease and illness in addition to providing health care services and education aimed at preventing health problems or maintaining health.

Professionalism Mid-Level Providers are committed to collaborative professional relationships with physicians and all members of the health care team.

Mid-Level Providers function within their professional and personal limitations.

Required: Master's Degree in Nursing. May be waived for applicants who obtained recognition as an Advanced Practice Nurse from the Texas State Board of Nursing prior to 1/1/2003. Graduate education and related Texas Board of Nursing authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population.


Required: Written authorization from the Texas Board of Nursing to function as an Advanced Practice Nurse. MAY BE REQUIRED: Authorization for limited prescriptive authority by the Texas Board of Nursing.
