SUMMARY

The purpose/function of the Radiation Oncology Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is to promote, provide and maintain patient care under physician supervision. They are responsible for clinical management of complex patients, scheduling of radiation treatment procedures, securing consents, prescribing medications, patient education, and coordination of care. The APP assists the Radiation Oncologist with radiation related procedures and clinical appointments. The APP coordinates activities, including writing orders and requesting consultations from multidisciplinary team members to meet patients' multiple needs and requests. The APP is responsible for the timely and efficient detection, documentation, and management of significant changes in the radiation oncology patient's condition and is able to meet and verbalize the needs of patients in their particular demands and experiences of an illness.

Ideal candidate will have a minimum of one year clinical experience as an APP in an inpatient setting or a minimum of two years clinical experience in an outpatient setting. One year experience as a clinical APP in medical oncology or related field strongly preferred.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Assessment

Conduct comprehensive initial and ongoing physical examinations based on age and diagnosis, including psychological status. Handle physician calls related to patient care for the assigned service. Perform clinical assessment and management for patients with no scheduled appointments. Perform clinical assessment and management of radiation-related side effects. Formulate working/differential diagnoses and stage work-up specific to service.

Planning

Develop and manage radiation clinical treatment plans, monitor outcomes, and initiate appropriate care. Use appropriate judgment to work autonomously and collaborate with the healthcare team to manage patient care throughout the continuum in a variety of settings.

Implementation

Order consultations for ancillary services. Order diagnostic tests and therapeutic procedures in accordance with institution and State of New Mexico requirements. Dictate specific notes as directed by supervising physician. Maintain institutional and divisional compliance with radiation safety precautions. Initiate clinical radiation treatment plan and continuously monitor, evaluate effectiveness of therapeutic interventions and accept accountability for healthcare outcomes.

Evaluation

Promote quality health care through integration of current research into practice. Review radiographs and results dictated by radiologist.

Documentation

Sign or complete a hospital medication order and sign or complete a prescription as provided by MD Anderson/PHS Policy. Record findings in the medical record. Dictate notes as specified by assigned physician. Draft radiation prescriptions to be signed by physician.

EDUCATION

Required: Master's Degree in Nursing or Doctor of Nursing Practice. May be waived for applicants who obtained recognition as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse from the Texas State Board of Nursing prior to 1/1/2003. Graduate education and related New Mexico Board of Nursing authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION

Required: Current license and certification as defined by the ANCC, AANP or NCC for the Advance Practice Nurse. Written authorization from the State of New Mexico of Nursing (BON) to function as an Advance Practice Registered Nurse. Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.

Preferred: American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS), ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification as required by patient care area.

MAY BE REQUIRED: Authorization for limited prescriptive authority by the New Mexico Board of Nursing.
